Too many schools in New Zealand are facing significant challenges, which is impacting the learning outcomes of too many students. There are a range of supports and interventions currently available, but these haven’t always driven sustained improvements.
This review will look at how and why schools struggle, how well the current supports and interventions are working to prevent and respond to challenges, and how the system could be improved for those schools that need it most.
How well are New Zealand schools assessing learning - and does reporting really help parents and whānau understand progress?
Assessment provides teachers with valuable information about student learning that can be used to inform instruction and supports. When provided to parents and whānau, this information can assist families in supporting their children at home.
This project examines how schools have assessed and reported student progress in reading, writing, and maths in Years 0-8 and, as well as how this is changing in response to new requirements.
How well is the implementation of the Attendance Action Plan going?
Regular school attendance is important for student achievement. The Government has developed an Attendance Action Plan (AAP) to improve attendance in our schools.
As it is being implemented, ERO is looking at how schools are responding to the changes. We want to find out what’s going well and where additional support may be needed to make sure attendance continues to improve.
How is the Learning Support Package going for schools and ECEs?
Budget 2025’s Learning Support Package provided funds to expand provision of learning support services.
In this multi-year, multi-phase review, ERO is looking at learning support funding implementation processes, and the impact of the learning support package on attendance, participation, progress, and achievement for students who have learning support needs.
